Parking Technology Manufacturers & Service Providers

As technology is used more frequently to assist in the management of parking facilities, manufacturers and parking service providers are finding an increasing number of ways to use technology to help motorists locate and pay for parking, while also assisting in the reduction of road congestion.

Besides mobile phone parking apps, motorists will frequently encounter technology when they are asked to input their vehicle registration at a parking kiosk, payment machine or at a validation terminal.

As well as being a potent tool for managing a parking facility, manufacturers and service providers should consider the needs of the motorist to ensure that technology is user friendly and does not contribute to a motorist incurring a parking ticket unnecessarily.

Suggested measures include:

• Avoiding situations where a motorist’s first key stroke reactivates a parking terminal from being in “sleep-mode”. This can result in a motorist not inputting the first character or digit of their vehicle registration which can lead to a parking ticket being issued for an incorrectly entered vehicle registration.

• Technology should be as user-friendly as possible and function effectively in any light conditions, especially after dark at outdoor parking kiosks or validation terminals.

• Instructions should always be clear and easy to understand for parking apps as well as at validation terminals and parking kiosks.
